Weekly Roundup of History, Archaeology and Writing Wisdom Dec 20-26

I didn’t “round up” very many posts this week. I did round up some fun with friends and some hanging out with my husband while he’s on vacation, so I’m not complaining. Here’s a very small weekly post of my favorites from around the web:

Intriguing how medicinal herbs are viewed in different ancient cultures. Here is a post on the Saxon, pre-Christian 9 “heroic herbs” by Kim Rendfeld. Click for English Historical Fiction Authors Blog

Oldest stone tool ever found in Turkey shows human dispersion fr Asia into Europe much earlier than previously documented. “This discovery is critical for establishing the timing and route of early human dispersal into Europe. Our research suggests that the flake is the earliest securely-dated artefact from Turkey ever recorded and was dropped on the floodplain by an early hominin well over a million years ago.” The scientists were able to date the deposits surrounding the flake with a precision that previous finds had not provided. I’ve been trying, and mostly failing, to imagine this ancestor of ours over a million years ago, working quartzite into tools and migrating across the miles. What do you think was foremost on the minds of these early hominids? Click here for Royal Holloway University website
