A murder mystery with a supernatural twist, Murder Casts Its Spell entertains with heart. Petra Rakowitz, a lawyer with her first murder case to handle, has plenty of motivation to get the accused off—he’s the investigator for her law firm and a good friend. But he’s keeping some secrets. And so has Petra’s own true nature. Now, at the most inconvenient of times, she’s thrown into chaos as her inner wizard blood reveals itself. She’s always defended the rights of wizards against the racist accusations of those who feel threatened by them—everyone should have equal rights before the law—but she never showed signs of magical blood at the usual age—twelve—so she certainly didn’t expect to be a sudden magical menace to herself and others until she learns to control her newly launched powers. Well-developed suspects surface to keep this twisty plot moving fast. The magic, including familiars who dwell in tattoos and a range of engaging spells, is fun and persuasive. There’s also romance and suspense in this well-written treat of a book.
