Pulling Your Reader Close, Deep POV

writers working together, Deep POV

I’m talking about deep POV to the California Writers’ Club in Sacramento Friday June 2, 9-11 am. Anyone can attend–whether in person or on Zoom. The CWC’s website has all the information. I’m told they will post a recording on their website later under meeting archives if all goes well.

Writing Community Rebuild

When I moved to California, I had to rebuild my extended writer community. I loved the writer friends and “village” I had in Phoenix. I was slow to get started here in Davis/Sacramento because of covid’s isolation, but I’ve made some excellent beginnings. This talk is one more step.

Teaching Deep POV

I like this topic. Figuring out deep point of view, or close point of view as it’s also called, was a long, hard process for me as a writer. Drawing my readers close to my characters, inside their emotions, bodies, and thoughts is essential to that page-turning feel that we all crave. We read for what happens to characters we care about, and deep POV is crucial for me in creating that bond.

I was working with a new critique partner here in the Sacramento area, and I suggested a “fix” that would pull the reader in closer. I chatted for a bit about how to shift the scene into deep point of view. We’ve continued that conversation over time, learning from each other. That led to this invitation to speak on the subject. The teacher in me loves to share knowledge I’ve earned the hard way.
